Events & Marketing Intern.

Animal Care Technician

Reports to: Animal Care Supervisor and Director of Operations

Part-time with morning, evening, weekday and weekend shifts

Description

The Animal Care Technician is responsible for assisting in the cost effective, sanitary and humane operation of the shelter and helping to ensure the health and welfare of all animals in the care of Tails Humane Society.

The responsibilities described herein reflect the general details considered necessary to describe the principle functions of the position and should not be construed as a complete description of all the requirements that may be inherent in the position.

Duties

  • Responsible for the humane care and treatment of all animals
  • Cleans each cage or kennel in a thorough and sanitary manner to prevent the spread of any infectious diseases
  • Feeds each animal in accordance with their dietary requirements and posted feeding procedures
  • Develops a general knowledge of animal behavior and temperaments
  • Develops a general knowledge of shelter animals’ personality traits
  • Stocks needed supplies in respective areas, including food, cleaning supplies and medical items
  • Maintains the laundry requirements for respective areas. Ensures that all animal articles and bedding are washed and disinfected as needed.
  • Monitors all animals for signs of illness and reports problems to management
  • Maintains records to ensure accuracy, timeliness and completeness
  • Assists in the medical treatment of animals as prescribed by the Medical Staff
  • Responsible for the general appearance of the shelter. This includes, but is not limited to, the outside grounds, front office, bathrooms, windows, etc.
  • Consistently strives to keep abreast of the field and animal welfare issues, techniques, procedures and equipment
  • Maintains a high level of communication with all Tails staff and Volunteers

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to perform physical work involving bending, scrubbing, mopping, walking, reaching, squatting, lifting up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of animal handling and communication preferred
  • Experience working in a kennel environment preferred

Work Conditions

Work performed in a high noise level area.  Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic (human to animal) diseases, bites and scratches.  Weekend shifts required.  Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times.

Vet Assistant

Job Title: Vet Assistant

Reports to:  Veterinarian

Part-time position (approx. 20 hours on average, work days are every other Mon and Wed, every Fri)

Summary

Responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, assisting veterinarian and veterinary technicians with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients, maintaining a clean and orderly clinic.

Job Responsibilities

  • Take directives from veterinary staff; follow clinic procedures and protocols
  • Responsible for prepping patients for surgery, including administering pre-anesthetic medication
  • General duties in the operating room during surgery include assisting with movement of patients, recovery of patients and general flow
  • Ability to monitor anesthesia and recognize abnormal conditions
  • Ensure prompt and accurate paperwork procedures are followed each day
  • Able to respond appropriately during an emergency, maintain competency in CPR procedures
  • Must be able to learn/understand basic veterinary medical concepts, including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks
  • Ability to communicate basic veterinary concepts to owners and be able to give information relayed by the vet
  • Ability to handle 45-60 dogs and cats per day on average
  • Assist with cleaning and clinic laundry
  • Position is based mostly within the medical department but may also include assisting in the care of shelter animals
  • Must work well independently and also as part of a team to perform responsibilities listed
  • Must be able to learn/recognize characteristics of animal behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior)
  • Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals (will train)

 Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Vet Assistant certificate preferred
  • Experience in a veterinary clinic, veterinary hospital and/or animal shelter or control facility
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary medical concepts
  • Ability to read/write/communicate in English, Spanish bilingual a plus
  • Ability to perform physical work involving bending, scrubbing, mopping, walking, reaching, squatting, lifting up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor
  • A strong commitment to the welfare and proper treatment of animals
  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced team environment, handle fluctuating priorities and multiple projects
  • Ability to work occasionally on evenings and weekends

Events & Marketing Intern- Summer Semester 2023

POSITION OVERVIEW

The intern will work directly with the Events Manager and Marketing Manager on a variety of duties
related to shelter marketing strategies and fundraising events. This position will have the opportunity to
work on projects independently and in collaboration with staff.

120 Hours, $575 Stipend

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Tails Humane Society will work with the successful candidate to identify the projects below that are
aligned with the candidate’s current skill set and the experience they are looking to gain.

  • Provide assistance with fundraiser planning and execution, specifically the online auction and yard
    sale
  • Help maintain social media platforms, specifically Instagram, Facebook and TikTokUpdate the Tails YouTube channel
  • Assist with marketing adoptable animals through social media and website
  • Create graphics, flyers and other marketing materials 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite required
  • Knowledge of graphic design software such as Canva preferred
  • Knowledge of social media platforms desired– Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok
  • Excellent reporting, writing and editing skills
  • Creative, pro-active individual who can work independently or as a team
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs and be able to go up and down stairs
  • Reliable transportation to the Tails shelter for at least half of the internship hours
  • Ability to work the majority of the internship hours during weekday mornings and afternoons
