Animal Care Technician Position (Cat Care)

 Reports to: Animal Care Manager and Director of Operations           

Position Duration: Part-time, approx 10 hours/week. Sat and Sun morning CAT CARE shifts currently available (7am-12pm).

Job Summary:

The Animal Care Technician (CAT CARE) is an essential member of the Tails Humane Society team, responsible for assisting in the care and treatment of animals while maintaining a clean and sanitary shelter environment. This role plays a key part in ensuring the health and well-being of all animals in the shelter and contributes to the shelter’s smooth daily operations. The Animal Care Technician will provide compassionate care, assist with animal medical treatments, and perform a variety of shelter maintenance tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the humane care and treatment of all animals, including feeding in accordance with dietary requirements and monitoring for signs of illness.
  • Clean and sanitize cages, kennels, and animal bedding to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and maintain hygiene standards.
  • Assist in the medical treatment of animals as prescribed by the Medical Staff and report any concerns to management.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of animal care, including illness monitoring and treatment.
  • Develop and maintain a general knowledge of animal behavior, temperaments, and personality traits.
  • Stock and maintain necessary supplies in respective areas, including food, cleaning materials, and medical items.
  • Manage laundry requirements for animal articles and bedding, ensuring they are washed and disinfected as needed.
  • Ensure the overall cleanliness and appearance of the shelter, including grounds, front office, bathrooms, and windows.
  • Foster clear communication with Tails staff and volunteers to ensure effective teamwork and operational success.
  • Stay informed about animal welfare issues, techniques, procedures, and equipment to continuously improve care standards.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including bending, scrubbing, mopping, walking, reaching, squatting, and lifting up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of animal handling and behavior.
  • Previous experience working in a kennel or shelter environment.

Work Environment

  • Work performed in a high noise level area.
  • Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic (human to animal) diseases, bites and scratches.
  • Safety procedures must be always adhered to.

Lead Veterinary Technician

Reports to: Veterinarian Position Duration: Part-Time (10-20 hours/week)
Payrate: $18.50/hr

Job Summary:
The Lead Veterinary Technician at Tails Humane Society supports their high-volume spay/neuter clinic by assisting the veterinarian with surgical procedures, ensuring animal safety and well-being, managing surgical flow, and maintaining clinic operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the veterinarian in setting up surgical procedures, maintaining a smooth flow of patients, and adhering to safety protocols while ensuring treatment areas are kept clean and organized.
  • Efficiently pre-medicate, induce anesthesia, intubate animals, and prepare all patients for surgery, ensuring their safety throughout the process.
  • Administer medications, vaccinations, and assist with maintaining accurate clinical records in the shelter database.
  • Handle 35-55 animals per day (dogs and cats), ensuring their comfort and safety during procedures.
  • Assist with the intake and release of patients, delivering post-operative care instructions clearly and professionally.
  • Recognize and address animal behavior issues (e.g., aggressive or fearful behavior, fractious/feral cats) using appropriate safety equipment and techniques.
  • Assist with cleaning the clinic, prepare surgical packs, and ensure necessary equipment is sanitized and ready for use.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within the veterinary team, providing essential care and support to animals.
  • Take inventory, prepare weekly clinic supply orders, and ensure the clinic is properly stocked.
  • Assist with euthanasia procedures when necessary, with compassion and professionalism.

Qualifications:

  • CVT status or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a veterinary technician in a clinic environment; shelter clinic experience is a plus.
  • Experience with animal handling, restraint, and behavior assessments, as well as administering intravenous injections and intubating animals for surgery.
  • Experience in anesthesia and surgery is required

  • Self-motivated, with the ability to challenge physical and mental capabilities and recognize personal limitations.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage fluctuating priorities and multiple tasks.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily works in a high-volume surgery environment, requiring the ability to manage multiple procedures and a fast-paced setting.
  • Frequent exposure to high noise levels, industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, and animal waste.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, bites, and scratches from animals.
  • Safety procedures must be strictly always adhered to ensure personal and animal safety.
  • Requires working as a key member of the surgical team, contributing to the overall flow and success of the procedures.
