Tail Waggin’ Results For January 2021
Our January 2021 Tail Waggin’ results are in and we are celebrating! Last month, 286 homeless pets found their forever homes! Did you know that we post weekly “Adoption Celebrations” each Monday night on our Facebook page? Make sure to follow us so you can see all of the happy endings!
Two Buns are Better Than One!
Did you know that February is Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month? Since we have plenty of sweet, homeless bunnies in our care, Tails will be celebrating until Sunday, Feb. 28 by offering each adopter the chance to adopt two buns for the price of one! That’s not all! During this special promotion, we will also be sending each adopter home with a personalized goody bag containing helpful information, supplies and treats! Any-bunny will tell you that having two buns is better than one! Why adopt two rabbits? Rabbits are social animals by nature and thrive being in the company of other rabbits. Having multiple rabbits make their companionship double the fun and, your new fluffy pal will have a friend just like them to play with, snuggle with and keep them company! So, hop to it! Stop by the shelter or view our available bunnies here or view all of our available animals here.
Canned Dog and Puppy Food Needed
Help! Tails Humane Society is in desperate need of wet / canned dog and puppy food. We are asking you, our compassionate community of supporters to please consider donating a few cans (any flavor, any brand) to help us feed the hungry dogs and puppies in our care. Aside from being used as a tasty treat, wet food helps us to add extra calories and nutrition for nursing moms and pups as well as seniors and sick or medically needy dogs and puppies.
How You Can Donate:
Donations of canned dog food can be dropped off inside our shelters lobby or sent to: 2250 Barber Greene Rd. DeKalb, IL 60115.
Short on time or don’t live close to our shelter? Donations can also be purchased and shipped directly to Tails from our Amazon Wish List here.
Monetary donations are greatly appreciated and can be made by visiting our secure online donation portal here or by mailing them to:

Granny Smith Needs a Home!
Help! I’m 8 year old Granny Smith and I’ve been looking for a home longer than any other animal in the shelter at Tails. I came to Tails back in September with dreams of finding a home. Truthfully, I am starting to get a little discouraged as I’ve seen so many other of the furry residents here at Tails find homes. I just want it to finally be my turn. I realize that not only my age and arthritis, but my personality wouldn’t fit for most people. I need a quiet home all my own. I don’t really care much for other animals or young children. I’d much prefer being the apple of your eye. I tend to spend my days snoozing on a pile of stuffed animals that I have recently de-fluffed. And I’m not into snuggling as I am a very independent gal…almost more like a cat than a dog. I do enjoy the company of a kind human and petting. I’m completely house-trained and you won’t have to fuss over me too much – a cozy bed, toys to chew on and some yummy snacks are all I ask for. My Adoption Fee has been completely DONATED! If I sound like the companion for you, please come and meet me. Otherwise, please spread the word about me far and wide. Surely there is someone out there for me! Can’t adopt me? Share my story with friends who can!
New! Tails Apparel Store
We’re so excited to share this! Tails now has it’s very own apparel store where you can purchase Tails hoodies, shirts and other fun items anytime you’d like! We even have children’s sizes too! As always, all of the money raised through these sales will go towards caring for the over 3,350 homeless animals in our care each year. We hope you have just as much fun wearing these items as we did making them!
Don’t forget, not only does the site offer discounts and promotions occasionally, but we will be adding more designs throughout the year! Make sure to check the store frequently so you don’t miss out on any of the items !
Jack Happy Tails Update
Jack was with us a good while and had many friends while at Tails. Jack had a terrible time finding a home, but a year ago his dreams came true. We received this happy update from the Bearrows family. “We can’t believe it’s been a year. Having Jack in the house has been a whirlwind with zero dull moments. We’ve done a lot of real cool stuff like camping, going to Lake Superior, obedience classes at Tails, and every adventure we can squeeze in between. His favorite things in the world are snow zoomies, car rides and snuggles. We were not looking to get another dog but a little birdie (one of the kids) said… go get Jack, he needs you. So we did… and we wouldn’t trade this awesome boy for anything! He loves everyone and everything. Thank you Tails. He’s such a good boy!”
Happy Adoptiversary, Jack!! We are so thrilled that you found yourself the perfect family! Want to share your story with us?

Mice In the Barn?
Did you know that Tails Humane Society has been saving feral lives one cat at a time through our Working Cat Program? We have been able to save the lives of relocated adult feral or semi-feral cats that would typically be considered unadoptable in a shelter environment. Most of these cats are not used to human contact or not suited to living in a traditional home setting. In fact, most Working Cats would not be happy as house cats! The cats we place in our program are typically relocated from overpopulated or unsafe outdoor colonies and hoarding situations. All of our Working Cats and are vet checked, healthy, altered, microchipped, vaccinated and have been given flea and tick preventatives. While there is no cost to adopt these working cats, and while not required, we gladly welcome donations to offset the cost of medical care for the cats in our program. Learn more about our lifesaving program or fill out an application here.
Happy Tails Benny!
We recently received the following adoption update from Sergio who adopted Benny the dog back in October. We hope this update brings a smile to your face and warms your heart!
“I was the lucky guy that took Benny home. I am glad to report that Benny is doing great! The first few days were a challenge because he had a fear of walking through doors or getting into the car, which he also had to get used to as the first times he threw up! Benny has been a sweetheart from the beginning and after realizing this is his forever home, he has warmed up even more so! He gets plenty of trips to the forest preserves in the area and the dog park. He is super smart, well behaved, and can even be taken on leash-less walks by me. Here at home he loves to roll in the tall grass and is obsessed with piles of leaves. He is very active outside and loves to track animals as well as wrestle and fetch, indoors he is a cuddle bug/bed potato, which I love. Naps by the fireplace are his favorite! I hope you guys have a great New Year’s and that more people have the opportunity to take in some of the pets!”
Benny, you found yourself a great home!
